How to Use Specific Knowledge Center Items
Up one levelThis folder contains examples of Knowledge Center (KC) items that demonstrate how you might use different tools provided by the KC. I created these items while becoming familiar with the KC.

- The audio file item can be used to stream audio presentations over the internet. You can upload presentations, music, or other types of audio files. Users can then listen, download, or share this file with others on the internet. Here is a sample of an audio presentation given for the LIPHEA Knowledge Center.

- The CD item can be used to collect multiple audio files together for users to listen to. The CD item is great to use when you have multiple presentations you would like to share in one location. I have included a few audio music presentations by my grandfather.

- Content panels allow you to create more interactive web resources. The power of the content panel is its ability to bring resources together from other locations into one location and is very useful for building lesson modules, presentations, and other types of information together. - This document will show you how to edit a document.

- An event allows you to notify individuals about upcoming activities. An example would be the Deans and Directors Meeting held in Nairobi, Kenya.

- File allows you to attach many different types of information such as a .zip, .txt, .doc, .pdf, .ppt, .jpg, .gif, and others. After uploading files you can link to them within documents and web pages. I have included a pdf file called "What is a file."

- The folder tool allows you to place content in a more organized fashion. It also allows you to build another location for adding all types of KC items. For example we are in a folder that I have used for testing KC items. The folder here was created to place images and files used in other items in this area.

- The image tool allows you to upload a .jpg or .gif file for viewing by others. Once an image is uploaded to the KC server it can be used in other resources that you create.

- The link tool allows you to direct a user to a particular website using the website URL (web address). For example, this link will take you to the NURSPH Online Course Area.

- The message board allows you to create discussion portals within your folder. Learners can read, comment, and post information. These discussions can be subscribed to using RSS technology.

- The news item can be used to create information that can be shared with individuals within your community. You might think of it as an upgraded announcement for individuals who need to know. The news item itself can be updated or changed by other individuals or members of the group that you specify.

- The page item allows you to create a simple HTML web page. The page is written with a very simple WYSIWYG editor that is very similar to Microsoft Word. HTML loads much faster online than PDF files and is much more intuitive for the user then downloading word files. I have created a very simple HTML page that can be created in about a minute.

- The recordings item allows you to collect different CDs you have placed online together into one location for better file management and distribution. I have placed the CD presented earlier in this location using the copy and paste feature of the KC.

- The RemoteFileIndex is basically a link to a piece of content on the KC, the web, or another server, but it tells the KC to index the full text of doc, pdf or html. This indexed content can be searched within the KC.

- The weblog (blog) is a powerful tool for keeping a log, journal, or chain of information and disseminating the information to others. Blogs make it possible for others to participate in knowledge creation and to keep up to date on your work using RSS. You can use a blog to inform others of your work, research, feelings, or viewpoints. You can also use a blog to collaborate with others asynchronously.

- The workgroup item can be used to create a secure community portal for your team to work together on projects or to collaborate with one another. This workgroup item is a sample template that you might follow to set up your own work groups. This basic template has a blog, forum and public and restricted access sections.
