LIPHEA

Welcome to LIPHEA

There is growing recognition that the health workforce in the developing world is not able to meet the health challenges these countries currently face, especially in the area of public health leadership.

The current gap between the UN Millennium Development Goals (MDFs) and the state of health indicators in East Africa warns of an impending public health failure and is evidence of the need for a stronger public health workforce. The Leadership Initiative for Public Health in East Africa (LIPHEA) is, therefore, strategically positioned to contribute to the process of building a competent and committed generation of public health professionals.

The initiative aims to strengthen the capacity of Makerere University School of Public Health (MUSPH) and Muhimbili University College of Health Sciences (MUCHS) to not only provide effective public health leadership for Uganda and Tanzania, but also to catalyze the training of public health leaders in the whole region.

Program Goals

  1. To establish long term partnerships between academic institutions in the United States and East Africa
  2. To provide substantial assistance to East Africa through curriculum revision, development of in-service short-term training of public health practitioners, and development of faculty in order to prepare the next generation of public health professionals for national and regional public health systems
  3. To reduce “brain drain” by improving professional development opportunities for public health leaders.
